Salts Of Phosphonates

Phosphonates (or phosphonic acids) are a broad family of organic molecules based on phosphorus (chemical symbol P), carbon (C), oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H).

A variety of phosphonates (including many amino phosphonates) occur naturally and in many different types of organisms. The metabolic functions of phosphonates in organisms include cell signalling, metabolism of cell membrane molecules, and the biological synthesis of natural antibiotics. Some bacteria, yeast and fungi can break down phosphonates and use them as a source of food and/or phosphorus.

Distinguishing features in phosphonates

Phosphonates are a group of organic compounds containing one or more phosphonic acid groups. Basically, a distinction can be made between mono- and polyphosphonates.

At strongly acidic pH values, the phosphonates are completely protonated. With increasing pH, the phosphonates are gradually deprotonated according to their dissociation constants. While the first proton is easily and completely split off, all other protons are split off more heavily and incompletely.

Monophosphonates are only partially soluble in water, while polyphosphonates are very soluble in water. The synthetically produced compounds, which are foreign to humans (so-called xenobiotic), and their metabolites can have negative effects on the aquatic environment; the delayed release of ortho-phosphate can promote eutrophication. Monophosphonates are commonly used as biocides, the best known being the herbicide N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, also known as glyphosate, its degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA).

Tetra Sodium Salt Of Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid

Direct and indirect risks to aquatic life depend on the dosage and the structure of the phosphonate. Acute and chronic toxicities cannot be excluded. In view of the extension of the authorization of biocides containing N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine, diffuse discharges into waters of the European Union (EU) will therefore continue to occur.

Polyphosphonates such as ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid (EDTMP) or aminotrismethylenephosphonic acid (ATMP) are used in many industrial and household applications such as membrane processes, desalination plants, paper and oil industries and detergents.

They act mainly as complexing agents and chelating agents. The stability of the metal complexes increases with the number of phosphonate groups. They suppress crystal growth (scaling), act as precipitation inhibitors and are stable under a wide range of physicochemical conditions against thermal decomposition, hydrolysis and photolysis.

Phosphonate groups, like phosphate groups, have a strong nucleophilic character, which leads to a high sorption affinity for electrophilic surfaces.

Types of Phosphonates

Phosphonates are compounds containing phosphonic acid groups (−PO 3H 2 or its salt form). They can be divided into many types according to their structure and application fields. The following are some common types of phosphonates:

Hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate (HEDP)

The molecular structure contains hydroxyl and ethylidene groups. It is often used in water treatment and has excellent scale and corrosion inhibition properties.

Aminotrimethylenephosphonate (ATMP)

The molecule contains amino and trimethylene groups. It is widely used in cooling water systems, boiler water treatment and other fields, and can effectively prevent scale formation.

Ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonate (EDTMP)

It has multiple phosphonic acid groups and ethylenediamine structure. It is often used in oil extraction, industrial cleaning and other fields. It has good chelating and dispersing properties.

2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylate (PBTCA)

The molecule contains both phosphonic acid groups and carboxylic acid groups. It has excellent scale inhibition, corrosion inhibition and dispersing properties. It is often used in high temperature and high hardness water treatment.

Applications

The largest market for phosphonates is in domestic and industrial detergents. Phosphonates ensure detergents wash effectively, enabling consumers to use lower doses. Manufacturers also utilise phosphonates to create detergents with a lower chemical load.

In detergents, phosphonates

Prevent mineral deposits (for example, scale) in washing machines and dishwashers, and on the clothes and tableware being washed. Phosphonates modify the properties of calcium and magnesium salt deposits in hard water, which stops these deposits from adhering to surfaces. This increases the lifespan of the machine and maintains the eco-efficiency of the appliance
Reduce re-deposition of dirt on cleaned textiles
Stabilise peroxide bleaches
Contribute to the removal of stains in bleach-free detergents
Protect the fragrances and natural (bio-derived) ingredients in detergents from oxidation
Prevent colours from fading.

Other applications

The same phosphonates that are found in detergents can be utilised in applications such as:
Ceramic, cement, and concrete production
Cosmetics and shampoos
Drinking water production, desalination systems, and purification of water membranes
Heating and cooling circuits
Industrial and large-scale cleaning applications
Medical drugs used for the treatment of conditions such as osteoporosis, vascular calcification, and bone cancer
Production processes for metal finishing, oil and petroleum, paint, paper, pulp, and textiles.
