Technical Parameters

ATMP, short for Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid, is a typical organophosphorus scale and corrosion inhibitor as well as chelating agent. Its molecular formula is N(CH₂PO₃H₂)₃, with CAS No. 6419-19-8 and molecular weight of 299.0. Featured with a stable molecular structure, the product exists as white crystalline powder or colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid. It boasts outstanding chemical stability, resistance to hydrolysis and high temperature up to 200°C, adapting well to harsh industrial working conditions.
The product exerts effects mainly through threshold inhibition and chelation. At a low dosage of 1-20 mg/L, it adheres to crystal nuclei of scaling salts, distorts crystal growth and turns hard scale into loose flocs easy to wash away. Its phosphonic acid groups can stably bind calcium, magnesium, iron and other metal ions in water to form soluble complexes, fundamentally preventing scale formation. Besides, it can form protective films on metal surfaces to deliver reliable corrosion inhibition performance.
Widely applied across industries, ATMP serves as a core agent for circulating cooling water systems in power plants, steel mills and chemical plants to protect pipelines and heat exchangers. It is also used in oilfield water treatment, boiler water treatment, metal pickling, textile, printing and papermaking industries for scale control, corrosion prevention and metal ion chelation. It is commonly compounded with polymers and zinc salts for better synergistic effects.
For application, the dosage ranges from 20 to 60 mg/L for better corrosion inhibition, and over 100 mg/L for pre-filming. Note that it shall be used together with copper corrosion inhibitors for systems with copper equipment. Affected by oxidizing biocides and limited in controlling calcium phosphate scale, it also requires proper disposal to reduce phosphorus-related eutrophication risks. Cost-effective and high-performance, ATMP is a preferred solution for industrial water treatment worldwide.
